Kniphofia

Kniphofia is a popular, old-fashioned plant for the perennial border. While older varieties produced flowers with bright orange-red tops and contrasting bright yellow 'skirts', the newer varieties often produce flowers in more muted shades, varying from cream, through peach and pinkish salmon, to orange or even green, with the flowers shading from dark to light, or sometimes all in one colour.

Most hybrid Kniphofias are deciduous perennials, producing long, coarse grassy leaves in spring, and strong stems with dense heads of narrow tubular flowers in late summer and early autumn. Flower stems grow to about 2'-3', although some newer hybrids are shorter. They prefer rich, moist soil in full sun or part shade, and form large clumps when established.

Kniphofias can be propagated from seed, or by division.
